What is Continental Philosophy?

Philosophy in America has traditionally been dominated by the analytic (sometimes referred to as the Anglo-American) tradition. Continental philosophy, on the other hand, originates from the European mainland, hence the name. The content and methodology of the continental tradition, while somewhat hard to exactly pinpoint, is seen as more literary with less of a focus on precision. Oftentimes its ideas rest on questioning the assumptions that analytic philosophy takes for granted. Other times you may recognize continental philosophers criticzing the very study of philosophy and arguing its intrinsic restrictions to subjective human experience. Regardless of anyone's opinions on it, continental philosophy has been and will continue to be a fruitful endeavor, both for humanity's knowledge and for the simple pleasures of reading it.
